Congratulations! to Nick Boatman of Pegram, TN
as the winner of the 2012 Southern Open.
Actually all three top Master Division finishers were in a three-way tie for
1st Place on game points, we using honor points to unscramble the
tournament winner. These 3 Masters played each other with Boatman
winning a game off Keen & drawing Stanley, but Keen won 2 games
off Stanley. Boatman played 2 more repair rounds with Keen, but this
time Larry made sure there was no careless mistakes! They drew their
last four games. "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated
game points. Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. In the 10:00am Southern States Checker Association business meeting
Frank Davis welcomed 22 players, announced that the ACF 3-Move National was
only three weeks away and to be held at the same location. You could
make contributions to Mary and videographer, John Acker was making a video on
many times TN State Champion checker player Hugh Burton which would be shown
at the Nationals. Hugh Burton is our National Honoree this year.
Davis reported on the
W.C. Green Trust Fund. Frank explained
the tournament rules, covered the Swiss 8 rounds at 2.5 hours per round tournament
format as scheduled over Friday - Sunday,
starting at 11am
on Friday, 8:00am on Saturday and 9:00am on Sunday.
Frank said, "He would make a judgment call on over time games to stay on schedule, if KingRow is used in a Master's decision by requested computer analysis, then a score of 60+
is
need for a win." We elected to repair only in
the last
two rounds,
awarding the bye to the lowest player and any repeat byes are only 2 points.
We re-elected the same officers for another year, as Frank Davis President of
(SSCA) Southern States Checker Association, Ken Christian as V-P, and Mary Davis as Secretary
/Treasurer. Ken Christian was recognized for his effort on soliciting
merchandise and obtaining
donations, door prizes, and player discounts from restaurants, merchants,
Wilson Co Bank & Trust, Chamber of Commerce, Merchants Association, and the Wilson
Co. Convention & Visitor Center. He is the Tennessee State and
Southern Checker Public Relations Man in the Wilson County area. We had 22 players from 7 states (10 Masters, 12 Majors played)
8 from TN; 5 from NC; 3 from GA & KY; 1 from AL, OH, & WV. Mary Davis was accepting donations for the 2012 National
3-Move Tournament which will be held in Lebanon, TN in July 30th -August 4th. We took up a love offering of $188.00 for James Atkins of
Greensboro, NC who is seriously ill with cancer. He usually plays the TN
State and Southern Open. The players also signed a sympathy cards which
will be delivered with our gift. We appreciated the donations, door prizes, meal discounts,
contributions and the cash prize fund,
which totaled $1,040.00, but
actually
payout by sponsor was
$1,046.00
because of rounding up to whole dollars. The Lebanon Democrat Newspaper sent out Mary Hinds, staff
writer and Dallus Whitfield, photographer
Friday morning to get a nice article and pictures of the Southern Tournament
which they ran the article in the The Lebanon Democrat Saturday paper. Many wives and friends attended, namely: Mary Davis, Shirley Lerum,
Paralee Shultz, Carol Williamson, and
Bernice Powell. Frank and Mary, our referee and scorekeeper did a fantastic job
as usual. We appreciate John Acker who had his video recorder and was
putting together material for the National by interviewing those players who
knew Hugh Burton. He also recorded players' round pairings results,
score-sheet, and provided timely result tables on the progress of the Southern
Tournament with his ChessArbitor Pro Draughts program on his laptop
computer which are
available at
http://acfnationals.com/south/ We appreciate Frank & Mary Davis for hosting our
Saturday noon pizza party, and keeping drinks & bottle water in the conference
room refrigerator available throughout our tournament. Majority of players attended Sunday service, which was opened by Frank Davis, invocation by Bill Gullett, songs by Ken Christian & Mary Davis, 2 solos each, and
a message
by Ted Williamson & Larry Pollard. John Webster was planning to attend, but his wife Mickey's
sister-in-law died of a heart attack April 3, and they were obligated to
attend the funereal and time with family. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all
who attended. Good Players - Good Fellowship!
Congratulations, Bill!
Congratulations, Paul!
Congratulations, Ted!
Congratulations, Harvey!
